Does GPS Beat A Speeding Ticket?
There has been this news story where a teenager has gone to court over a speeding ticket. The defense has been the readings on the GPS unit.
A GPS will ping, in this case every 30 seconds, to mark the spot where a vehicle is. One can gauge an average speed based on two points because you have time and distance which speed is calculated on.

So does a GPS unit actually beat a speeding ticket?
If you read the comments to that story, you will see alot of debate and alot of math used trying to prove or disprove the GPS readings.
Here is the issue might be brought up in court with this type of defense.
Just because you can prove your average speed is less than the speeding doesn’t prove that you were not speeding. If you go an average of 45 miles an hour over 30 seconds. You could have gone 90 miles an hour for 15 seconds then 0 for 15 seconds. That’s still an average of 45 miles per hour.
If you are going to try to use GPS for this type of reading, then most courts are probably going to start giving defenses to their radar units over 30 second pings.
So what do you do with this?
Maybe one day GPS will give more accurate speeds by having more pings. Maybe courts won’t allow GPS readings. Maybe this GPS reading will stand up in court and the teenager won’t get the ticket.
